“The stories I paint are inspired by a number of things. Firstly, my heritage, my family and my childhood. I infuse this with many things I read, literature about and from my continent. It is also inspired by how I imagine my Africa to be in the years to come, when Africa is at its happiest. That’s what I want to translate in my art” – Ntate Phakela.
Ntate Phakela is a 21-year old multidisciplinary artist based in Vosloorus, a large township situated in the South of Boksburg and just east of Katlehong in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, South Africa. Phakela uses African literature and ordinary day-to-day African interactions as the base of his artworks and storytelling. His artistries come into being when he merges his fictional influences from literature and his own imagination with realism which comes from his daily interactivities. According to Coorator his work pays homage to the traditional tone of African storytelling of the past, and to how African history, culture and tradition was passed on through stories. Here on Culture Club – Magazine we have had the honor to feature Ntate Phakela in one of our exhibitions, Digital Exhibition: Hair-itage.
Coorator is a Switzerland based art platform which offers meaningful curated art pieces made by artists around the world. With a special focus on the creative process and the work behind every art piece and photography, we invite our audience to understand art as a labor: an emotional and technical work which requires hours of training, studying and devotion as well as access to different materials to produce it.
“We see art as a possibility. Possibility to create social change and impact. Possibility for those who create them to feel safe and recognized. Possibility to create bridges between cultures, people and lives.”
