NIROX is proud to announce the inauguration of the Phetoho Basketball Court, generously sponsored by Giants of Africa, on 13 December 2024. The event will feature the presence of distinguished guests, including Masai Ujiri, founder of Giants of Africa, and the Mayor of Mogale City, underscoring the significance of this milestone for the community and the region. This trailblazing facility is situated on the D540, the primary access road through the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The court is a significant addition to the cultural and sports landscape of the Kromdraai Valley, embodying NIROX’s vision for a connected, integrated and vibrant community.
A Cultural Vision for the Kromdraai Valley
Eighteen years ago, NIROX set out to reimagine the Kromdraai Valley as a cultural hub. Over time, this vision has grown, with the addition of esteemed neighbors such as the Columba Leadership Academy, the Villa-Legodi Centre for Sculpture, and FARMHOUSE58—a regenerative enterprise focused on land, hospitality, and wellness. This network of institutions has established the Valley as a beacon of cultural, creative, and community-driven development.
Transforming Farmland into a Community Asset
Recently, NIROX acquired stewardship of an underutilized farm with significant potential for repurposing. This land and its existing structures are being transformed into a multi-disciplinary cultural, creative, and sports initiative. The Phetoho Basketball Court is a cornerstone of this endeavor, offering facilities including seating for 200 spectators, change rooms, toilets, a tuck shop, and communal spaces. Future plans include the development of a cycling and running academy and additional sporting disciplines on adjoining land.
Empowering Local Communities through Sport
Phetoho will serve as the central hub and home base for the community’s basketball and netball teams, providing a dedicated space where players can train, compete, and foster a sense of unity. It will also be home to Run with Tom, an initiative led by accomplished long-distance runner Thomas Nkuna. With 13 Comrades Marathons under his belt, Nkuna has trained 30 active members, many of whom excel in local events. The property boasts exceptional running trails that will integrate into a wider multi-property trail network throughout the Cradle.

A Catalyst for Change
The name “Phetoho,” meaning “Change” in Sesotho, reflects the court’s mission to provide opportunities and support to underserved communities in the Cradle. This includes the 1,500 residents of Portion 26, an informal settlement, and the pupils of Matla Combined School and their families. By addressing rural idleness and its associated challenges, Phetoho aims to create a vibrant, self-sustaining community while offering local youth an alternative to urban migration and its risks.
A Shared Vision for the Future
The Phetoho Basketball Court exemplifies NIROX’s commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and community well-being in the Cradle of Humankind. It represents a significant step toward building a thriving, inclusive rural community where cultural and sporting opportunities provide hope, resilience, and connection.
“The Phetoho Basketball Court represents an exciting chapter for our community and the Kromdraai Valley as a whole. This project is more than just a basketball court—it’s a platform for change, a catalyst for unity, and an opportunity to reimagine what sport can mean in rural South Africa. Basketball, a relatively niche sport in our context, has the potential to inspire new avenues of personal and athletic growth, bringing our youth and community together in a shared purpose.” – Ntate Phakela, Communications Manager at NIROX
“This court is just the beginning of a larger sports initiative that seeks to foster not only athletic excellence but also a deeper sense of connection and belonging. By encouraging participation and teamwork, Phetoho will be a space where individuals can thrive, both on and off the court, and where the seeds of community-driven change can truly take root.”
