The Evolution of Doechii, The Swamp Princess

Starting as an independent artist, Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, known popularly as Doechii, released her first single titled “Girls” on SoundCloud in 2018. She was also a YouTuber who regularly posted videos including music and vlogs. In 2019, she released one of her first projects, “Coven Music Session, Vol. 1.” Followed by and her debut EP, “Oh the Places You’ll Go”, her debut self-funded EP released in 2020.

“Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” her 2020 breakout track from “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” went viral on TikTok in 2021 introducing her to a wider audience while highlighting her storytelling ability and playful yet introspective lyricism. In 2021, Doechii’s career reached new heights with key moments that expanded her audience. She was featured in the BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher, performed “Wat U Sed” alongside Isaiah Rashad at the awards show, and released her second EP, Bra-Less. That same year, she also joined SZA’s tour as an opening act, further solidifying her presence in the industry.

In 2022, Doechii became the first female rapper signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). That same month, she released her debut single under TDE, “Persuasive” (featuring SZA). In April 2022, Doechii released “Crazy”, along with a music video. On August 5, 2022, she dropped her second EP and first major label project, “She / Her / Black Bitch.”

Her debut EP under TDE, “She/her/black bitch,” further solidified her reputation as a bold, boundary-pushing artist. By 2023, she had secured a BET Award for Best New Artist and performed on major stages like the BET Hip Hop Awards and festivals worldwide. In April 2023, Doechii performed at the 22nd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Later that year, she made her acting debut in Earth Mama, a drama film directed by Savanah Leaf.

In August 2024, Doechii released her third mixtape, “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” which received critical acclaim. The project showcased her evolving artistry, blending bold lyricism with genre-bending production, further solidifying her status as a rising force in hip-hop. Doechii won her first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album with her album “Alligator Bites Never Heal” at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on the 2nd of February 2025. This achievement made her the third woman in history to win in this category. Following her win, she released a new single titled “Nosebleeds” on the 3rd of February 2025, celebrating her accomplishment.

Doechii’s evolution reflects an artist who refuses to be boxed in. From her early viral success to co-signs from major artists and critics, she continues to push the envelope with her high-energy performances, eclectic style, and ability to blend rap, pop, and alternative influences seamlessly.
