“These works are a spiritual compass to the world and yet to be discovered through colour, form and artistry” – Lindokuhle
Lindokuhle Tshabalala is a Johannesburg-based, self-taught visual artist whose work reclaims African history by reimagining and celebrating African figures and stories often overshadowed in mainstream narratives.
Lindokuhle’s artistic journey and self-taught approach give him a unique, unrestricted perspective. He approaches his work with flexibility, allowing each painting to evolve through new techniques.

In his latest body of work, each piece within the series continues his quest to depict people of color embodying love, peace, war, strength, self-assurance, and cultural pride. This work directly confronts stereotypes and narratives that have historically minimized or erased African heroism and dignity.
Through his art, Lindokuhle not only preserves African heritage but also invites viewers to re-evaluate their understanding of African identities. His powerful imagery challenges perceptions and highlights the richness and resilience of African culture.
“My craft is not merely oil painting on canvas but an equivalence to “imbongi” a continuation of African clan names, a nuanced way of depicting black women’s stoic and complex lives. These works are a spiritual compass to the world and yet to be discovered through colour, form and artistry” – Lindokuhle
