Sakhile Nkosi aka Shugela is a Johannesburg-based vocalist whose sound is an infusion of Afro-Soul and contemporary RnB. We had the opportunity to catch up with her for today’s Five @ Five edition.

1. As an artist, where would you say you draw your inspiration from?

As an artist, I draw inspiration from my surroundings, personal experiences, and emotions. Growing up in South Africa, I’m influenced by African rhythms, jazz, and Neo-soul music. Nature, love, and social issues also fuel my creativity.

2. How has your sound grown from when you first started out?

My sound has evolved significantly since I started. Initially, I focused on traditional African music, but over time, I’ve incorporated elements of soul, R&B, and electronic genres. My voice has become more expressive, and my songwriting has become more introspective.

3. If you could describe your sound to someone who doesn’t know it, how would you describe it?

My sound is a fusion of Afro-soul, and contemporary R&B. Imagine a rich, soulful voice weaving stories of love, hope, and self-discovery over intricate rhythms and melodies.

4. Is there a full project in the works?

Yes, I’m working on a full-length album, titled “Ubuntu.” It explores themes of identity, community, and personal growth. Expect soul-stirring vocals, infectious beats, and heartfelt storytelling.

5. If you could go back to the first time you recorded a song, what would you say to that version of Sakhile?

To my younger self, I’d say: “Believe in your unique voice and vision. Don’t compare yourself to others; your authenticity is your strength. Take risks, experiment, and stay true to your art. Your journey is worth documenting; keep creating, and the world will resonate with your message.
