In The City: with Lordkez

Lordkez is a South African singer, rapper, and songwriter known for her eclectic style and infectious energy. She blends elements of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music to create a unique sonic experience. Her lyrics often touch on personal experiences, social commentary, and themes of love and loss, resonating with audiences across the globe. With her distinctive sound and dynamic stage presence, Lordkez continues to captivate listeners and establish herself as a star in the making. I had a short and sweet chat with her at In The City and this is how it went.

How does it feel to be recognized as a genre-challenger powerhouse in the music scene?

I’m genuinely grateful that’s how people perceive me. I believe it speaks to the essence of my music. My music defies categorisation; it blends elements of R&B, soul, hip-hop, and rap seamlessly.

Your music seems to defy easy categorization. How do you approach genre-blending and experimentation in your creative process?

I tend to follow my intuition when creating music. It’s all about tapping into my feelings and letting the sound guide me. I give myself the freedom to explore what feels natural in the moment.

What inspires your eclectic style and sound? Are there any particular artists or influences that have shaped your music?

As a child, I vividly recall my mom listening to India.Arie, Whitney Houston, and Brandy, while my dad favoured rap artists like Nas, Tupac, and Kanye. It’s surreal to think I was familiar with Kanye West’s music when I was just 7 years old. I believe this blend of influences is a perfect explanation for the sound of my music.

Your performances are known for their energy and charisma. How do you prepare for a live show, and what do you hope audiences take away from your performances?

In terms of preparation, we hold rehearsals regularly, typically twice a week for a few weeks leading up to the performance. Additionally, I prioritize vocal training to maintain the health of my voice. Just before stepping onto the stage, I take a moment for a brief prayer, seeking to be filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Can you tell us about any memorable experiences or highlights from your career so far?

One standout highlight in my career was the chance to collaborate with Bas, the talented artist from Dreamville. Working alongside him in the studio, creating music together, and featuring him on my album was truly memorable. Additionally, performing on the main stage at Rocking the Daisies was another significant milestone that I’ll always cherish.

In addition to your music, you’re also known for your unique sense of style and visual identity. How do fashion and aesthetics play a role in your artistic expression?

I thoroughly enjoy expressing myself through various mediums such as fashion, art, makeup, and more. Embracing different styles and forms of expression allows me to stand out and captivate attention. To be honest, I revel in it.

How do you navigate the challenges and opportunities of being an artist in today’s music industry?

While I am deeply involved in the music industry, I often find myself intentionally distancing from certain aspects of it. There are occurrences that I prefer not to engage in. However, I am immensely thankful for my label, both for providing me a platform and for helping me stay grounded. Regarding whether I’m truly part of it, I’m not entirely sure how to respond other than to say I maintain a certain distance.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are looking to carve out their own path in the industry?

Please don’t vape. [Laughs affectionately] Seriously, please don’t vape. Follow your heart. Surround yourself with people you trust, especially those who support you. That’s crucial.

Lastly, what can fans expect from your performance at In The City, and what are you most looking forward to about the festival?

Guests can expect a live band, a surprise guest, Loatinover Pounds, and overall good vibes.
