Igniting Nostalgia Through The Lens of Bongani Dludlu

Bongani Dludlu is an emerging photographer whose work mainly focuses on capturing the essence of nostalgia. His style of photography typically aims to evoke feelings of the past or longing for a dated era by using techniques, editing styles, or subject matter reminiscent of the past. I had a chat with Bongani about his photography journey and this is how it went.

What inspires your nostalgic style of photography?

As a self-taught photographer and creative director from the favela (township), I draw inspiration from the longevity and beauty of township life, particularly in the 70s and 80s. My style is influenced by old movies, ancient history, and retrospective fashion, allowing me to create nostalgic stories in my work. Ultimately, my style is shaped by what I find appealing and meaningful through my own eyes and experiences.

How do you evoke feelings of nostalgia in your photos?

The nostalgia in my photos is crafted through the merging of moments and the passage of time, achieved via juxtaposition and editing style. This creates an epoch feeling, blending grainy tones with modern digital artistry. I aim to fuse fashion with visual storytelling, portraying subjects as uniquely beautiful and confident, evoking character and self-assurance.

Are there particular locations or subjects you find most nostalgic to capture?

Yes, the essence of my work lies in the creative exploration of locations and subjects, grounded in the art of visual storytelling. I aim to capture the diverse energies, cultures, and people, showcasing the rich tapestry of human experience. Through my photography, I strive to evoke emotions and transport viewers to new realms, where they feel connected to the narrative. My focus is on finding subjects with unique artistic charisma, whose stories resonate deeply with the viewer.

Can you share a bit about the process behind creating your photography
aesthetic?

The key to curating aesthetics in photography for me is extensive travel, which exposes me to new places and fuels my creativity. I draw inspiration from sources like reference books, magazines, and historical stories, focusing on photographers and filmmakers whose work resonates with the nostalgic world I aim to create. I heavily rely on moodboarding to gather placements and research, particularly on colour grading reminiscent of old retro movies, composition, and narrative elements.

What do you hope viewers experience when they see your photography?

I aim to transport viewers into an atmospheric dimension reminiscent of a nostalgic fashion era, blending the styles of the 80s and 90s with modern art. Through my photography, I strive to educate and inspire, fostering self-expression and self-discovery. My work serves as a visual narration, highlighting the importance of freedom of expression and embracing one’s cultural identity. Specifically, I seek to empower people of colour, especially youth from township backgrounds, to take pride in their heritage and express themselves authentically. By infusing my images with emotions and cultural elements, I aim to create a meaningful and inspiring experience for my audience.
