This is an unconventional blog post, but I felt the need to publish it. This is an open love letter to my favorite South African musical duo, Darkie Fiction ( Yoza Myanda and Kat Daddy, uBhut’ shokolate. )
I was firstly introduced to Darkie Fiction mid-year, last year. I was home watching tv when the “Bhoza” music video aired, I obviously increased the volume cause I was intrigued by the visuals first then I heard the sound and the lyrics.. if I remember clearly I think I lost it.
Fast forward to December, I was home again watching tv (side note: I love watching tv) I saw a Trace Urban quiz ad and it was Darkie Fiction , I sat still and watched the ad quietly without even blinking the entire time cause I love Yozas’ voice, I love how they looked good together as a musical duo (another side note: I didn’t know they were ”mom and dad” back then) they exude and create an authentic and original South Africa new age Kwaito aura and sound.
A few days later I downloaded the Sobabini: A Mzantsi Evolution EP and I can confirm that I know every song word for word. Ever since I heard the EP I wanted to see them perform live, I stumbled upon a poster about Darkie Fiction performing at Afrophunk in Braamfontein on the 29th but unfortunately I couldn’t make it cause I was in Limpopo, long story short I stumbled upon another poster on Twitter this year about Yogi sip young@art exhibition and when I saw that Darkie Fiction will be performing I made sure that I don’t miss it. I was extremely happy and a bit overwhelmed , I sang my brains out and danced along. It was one of my best days this year thus far, and my favorite song right now is “Abazali Bam” can’t wait for the new EP.
THE END.
