A Young Venda Poet Publishes His First Anthology.

Funanani Masiagwala is a 19-year-old boy who was born and raised in Venda Thohoyandou, Limpopo. He is an extremely amazing poet that fell in love with writing when he was 14 years old. Funanani published his first anthology on the 10th of January 2018 on wattpad titled WINE IN TEACUPS. I had a quick interview with him to know more about his anthology and this is what he said:

Q: At what age did you start writing?

A: I started writing when I was 14 years old, it was odd in my age to write but it was worth it.

Q: What inspired you to start writing?

A: My inspiration is not so oblivious or away from life, I got inspired to write because I legit wanted to see myself in a play or a session where poetry is being spiral. Although, I had stage fright it never brought me down, till perfection came home.

Q: Are the any writers or poets who you look up to, that inspired you to start writing?

A: Yes, there are some poets that inspired me to write. I was under the light of Dante, Hopkins G, Houdman A, Johnson M, Kendall H. Although they are international poets and old school, they played a big role in my poetry.

Q: Tell me a little about Wine In Teacups (W.I.T.C).

A: W.I.T.C is an anthology of poetry, it is a book that I wrote trying to project all different perspectives over life, I was trying to tell out my thoughts about Love, Hate, Happiness, Sadness and things that are not for life, but in most of the pieces I ran my imagination as fast as I could.

Q: How did you come up with the name of your anthology?

A: The book itself is more of a contradiction or ironic as ever, so people only expect wine to be in glasses so in a teacup it brings out the vibe of life on the other side, the unexpected vibe to be precise. So wine in teacups is a living contradiction, it resembles the whole idea of the anthology.

Q: Five things that best describe you?

A: Poetry, poetry, poetry, poetry & poetry.

Q: Who’s your favourite writer or poet?

A: I got two favourite poets, I legit can’t weigh them.

Q: Poetry or fashion?

Q: Your favourite poem from W.I.T.C?

A: The Solange of my own universe, because I was not in a clear state when I wrote that. But it came out best, I was surprised too.

Q: Finish this sentence with one word, In 2018 I want to…

A: …kickasses.
